Lemon essential oil is an extremely concentrated oil that comes from *cold pressing the peel of the fruit.
Note that lemon essential oil is incredibly different than the lemon juice that comes from the actual fruit itself.
Because it is so concentrated, lemon essential oil needs to be diluted before use on the skin at a maximum of 1-2% to avoid irritation and sensitivities (read more on that below in the safety section!).
*Cold pressing is a common extraction method for citrus essential oils, whereas steam distillation is a more common method to obtain oils from leaves, roots, and botanicals (see this video explanation on cold pressing vs. steam distillation).
Essential oils are made up of around 200+ tiny molecules, and the variations are what make one oil different from another in terms of aroma, use, and safety precautions.
Some of these molecules are in very small amounts, whereas some are so significant in number that they dominate the overall behavior (or ‘personality’) of the oil.
Is the oil heavy? Light? Thin? Thick? Absorbed easily? Slowly? Toxic? Non-toxic?
All of this is crucial information to know before using an essential oil for any reason, but especially for use in skin care.
Organic lemon essential oil (Citrus limon) is highest in a component called ‘limonene’ (at 67.41%, as can be seen in the red box illustration below), which is in the monoterpene chemical family.
This percentage is *significant when compared to other constituents present in lemon essential oil.

In vitro research supports that in general, oils in the monoterpene chemical family have the following therapeutic activity:
antiseptic, reduces stagnation, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, penetrates bodily tissues easily, airborne deodorizers
D-Limonene in particular (a component found in many citrus peels, not just lemon!) has been found to activate white blood cells and is immune supportive.

As strange as it sounds, there is quite a bit to take into consideration when using lemon essential oil for skincare.
Essential oils are incredibly concentrated, and using them directly out of the bottle without doing your homework can cause skin reactions from as minor as a rash to as painful as a real-deal chemical burn.
No essential oil lasts forever, and citrus oils in particular have the shortest shelf life of all EOs due to their chemical makeup.
Monoterpenes, which is the prominent chemical family of lemon, oxidize easily (this means the chemical bonds of the oil break down and change when exposed to heat, air, and light). Oxidized oils high in monoterpenes are very damaging to skin.
Lemon essential oil has a shelf life of 1-2 years, and that is assuming the bottle has been tightly sealed, stored in a cool environment, and away from direct sunlight.
If an oxidized lemon essential oil (one that is used past its shelf life or has been improperly stored) is used in a skin care formulation, it could lead to skin irritation or skin sensitization, which you would never want for yourself or your customers.
Lemon essential oil is phototoxic, which means that when the oil is used on the skin without proper dilution rates (see chart below) and then exposed to sunlight, a painful reaction could occur in the form of blistering, sunburn, or other skin irritations.
Since lemon essential oil is phototoxic, it MUST be used at proper dilution rates.
When used on the skin, you must stick to a 1-2% dilution to avoid skin irritation (this means 5-12 drops per fluid ounce, as outlined in the chart below).
Simply add the appropriate number of drops of essential oil to a carrier oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond oil) and/or a thick (melted) butter such as shea butter or cocoa butter with the help of a stove.
